Gehrmans ballets are now listed in the database

Gehrmans, a music publisher in Sweden is now listed in the database. What I find fascinating as I’m discovering stage works is how early the saxophone is added to the orchestration. Today I present you with the first Swedish ballet that uses the saxophone.

Date: 1916-23

Ballet: Bergakungen op. 37a (The Mountain King) by Hugo Alfvén

Saxophone: Alto

One of the reasons I began this list was to find works orchestrated for the saxophone. As I was discovering operas that use the saxophone, I would check out the recording and the saxophone was missing. Listening to various recordings of this suite, sometimes the saxophone is replaced with the oboe. The first step is finding the work. Once we know the work exists, then it becomes easier to advocate for the saxophone to be used in the piece as originally intended.
