Watch the premiere of “The Time of Our Singing,” featuring Saxophonist Mark Turner

The Time of Our Singing, La Monnaie/De Munt

Belgian composer and jazz pianist Kris Defoort premiered a new opera last month, The Time of Our Singing. This opera is based on Richard Powers’ 2003 novel of the same name which tells the story of a mixed raced family growing up during racial segregation in America. This production is staged by the Belgian opera company La Monnaie/De Munt. The opera is now streaming on Operavision for free until March 24, 2022. You can watch it here.

A jazz quartet is embedded in the orchestra, featuring one of Kris Defoort’s long time collaborators, tenor saxophonist Mark Turner. The other members of the quartet are Lander Gyselinck on drums, bassist Nicolas Thys, and Hendrik Lasure on piano.
